| The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center is dedicated
to excellence, experimentation and education in all forms of contemporary
art.
Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (the Contemporary)
has been a defining force in Atlanta’s cultural life since
1973; having been formed initially as Nexus Contemporary Art Center.
What began as an artists’-run cooperative has evolved into
an organizational model for contemporary art centers throughout
the nation. The Contemporary is a multidisciplinary arts center
that contributes to Atlanta’s arts scene by exposing the work
of local, regional, national, and international artists to the Greater
Atlanta community. Through our programming areas and educational
outreach, the Contemporary strives to provide a service that is
unique in Atlanta and the Southeast.
Exhibitions
With five exhibitions and a number of other presentations throughout
the year, the Contemporary’s gallery is one of the South’s
most dynamic spaces for artistic exchange and experimental thinking.
Exhibitions explore current ideas, attitudes and new directions
in contemporary artistic expression. The exhibition schedule offers
a diverse mix of solo and group exhibitions presenting a broad range
of local, national and international works. Esteemed by the international
arts community, the Contemporary has earned a pivotal role in Atlanta’s
cultural landscape by making contemporary art accessible and by
encouraging its creation.
Education
A cornerstone of the Contemporary’s mission is to inform diverse
audiences that contemporary art encompasses multi-sensory forms
of expression in which aesthetic, cultural and social meanings are
exposed and debated. The Contemporary’s Education and Outreach
Program promotes public understanding through the appreciation of
contemporary art and its relationship to our everyday lives. Symposia,
workshops, lectures, panel discussions and exchanges of ideas and
opinions accompany each exhibition. Artist's talks and performances
incorporate audience participation and employ interactive strategies
to stimulate critical thinking and cultural activism.
Studio Artists
The Contemporary serves as a catalyst, sparking the imaginations
of emerging, mid-career, and established professional artists, as
well as critics and curators, by providing them with a setting in
which they can explore individual visions. Since 1973, the Contemporary
has juried work and awarded studio workspaces at a subsidized rate
to artists working in a variety of media. In addition to fostering
a collaborative environment and providing space for working artists,
the program also serves as a source for information concerning the
local and national exhibition scene.
Membership
The Contemporary offers membership levels for all budgets, from
the student to the established patron of the arts. Being a member
means connecting to the contemporary arts scene on many levels –
as observer, learner, participant, and/or creator. The Contemporary
offers exciting opportunities for members to mingle with others
while supporting Atlanta’s premiere center for contemporary
art.
