Studio application

Atlanta Contemporary Art Center offers subsidized studio spaces for artists to rent. Spaces vary in size. Some are equipped with dark rooms. All studios have heating and air conditioning.

Criteria for selection include, among others, consistency with the institutional focus on contemporary art, history of community involvement, need and your level of activity as a working artist.

We are extending an invitation to artists interested in studio space to apply for the 2008 studio vacancies. Emerging, mid-career, and established artists are invited to apply for studios; selection is made by the panel of current Contemporary board members, studio artists, staff and representatives from the Atlanta community.

The next call for applications will be posted in November 2008.

The Contemporary’s studio program supports the practicing, professional artist by providing studio space at reasonable rates.  With multiple studios available, the program fosters a collaborative environment supportive of the creative process.

Overview

The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center offers fourteen workspaces at the 535 Means Street campus.Studios range in size from 225 to 755 square feet, and come equipped with a sink, telephone outlet, and heating and air conditioning with individually regulated thermostats.  Some are equipped with dark rooms.    Each space is unique. Studio entrances are located within a secure courtyard.

Rental rates are based on the square footage of the studio; rates are well below market value for similar space in downtown Atlanta.  Utilities are included in the rent.

Tenure for the studios is three (3) years, with an optional two (2) year extension based upon the recommendation of the currently seated Studio Panel.  Artists are required to sign leases and provide a security deposit, first month’s rent at the beginning of the lease agreement and proof of renter’s insurance.  Studio artists are also required to participate in two open houses a year in which their studios are open to public visitation.

Artist studios are open for public viewing two times per year at special events.  The Contemporary’s commitment is to provide low cost studios, and the artist in return provides three hours per month per year of community service and two open studios per year.  A collaborative environment is encouraged through proximity of the studio artists, the Contemporary’s Gallery and its education programs.

The Contemporary neither undertakes nor implies any formal obligation to exhibit or publish studio artist work, as the studio program does not take the position of representation of individual artists.

We look for artists who have achieved a high degree of technical facility, display obvious talent, who demonstrate a commitment to their career through an existing body of work and have nurtured an individual vision.   Quality of work is the primary directive and artists are selected accordingly.  Artists from culturally diverse communities are encouraged to apply.

Artists are expected to work in their studios on a consistent and ongoing basis. The program was set up to accommodate artists whose primary interest is the expressive use of their medium rather than a strictly commercial application.  The studios are to be used as workspaces, not as living spaces, salesrooms or administrative offices.  Standard studio practice safety procedures are required; including proper storage of flammable materials and a no smoking policy.  Studios may not be sublet.

The studio program fulfills a basic need, which is outlined in the NEA recommendations concerning the individual artists:

“The basic overriding need for individual artists is time to concentrate, for extended periods, on the development of their work.  Since most artists rely on other employment, such as teaching, for their economic livelihood, uninterrupted time for intensive aesthetic investigation is hard to come by.”

This program represents an acknowledgement by the Contemporary of the artists’ professional status in the community, and the artists need space where they can concentrate on the development of their work.
